FAQ
What is online trauma therapy, and does it work over Zoom?
Online trauma therapy is professional counselling and psychotherapy for the effects of trauma, held by video call instead of in a therapy room. I use Zoom, and FaceTime can be arranged with notice. Many people find that being in their own space helps them feel calmer, and it also means you can choose a specialist trauma therapist wherever they are, rather than only someone nearby. Research on therapy delivered by video is encouraging, and I've worked this way with clients for many years. I'm an NCPS accredited counsellor and psychotherapist with over 20 years' experience.
Can DBR, EMDR, IFS or Brainspotting be done online?
Yes. I EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, Brainspotting and Deep Brain Reorienting (DBR) online, and most sessions integrate more than one approach depending on what suits you. Video sessions work well because these therapies rely on your attention, awareness of your body and what's happening inside, and my guidance, and none of that needs us to be in the same room. Some methods are easier to adapt online than others, and I'll talk you through how we'd do it before we start.
Do I have to talk about what happened?
No. You don't need to tell me the story of what happened in order to heal from it. The approaches I use, such as IFS, EMDR, Brainspotting and DBR, work with how trauma is held in your mind and nervous system, and that can happen without going over the details. If you do want to talk about your experiences, you're welcome to, at your own pace. There's no shaming, no criticism and no blame, and I start from wherever you are.
Who do you work with, and which countries can you see clients in?
I work with adults who are dealing with the effects of trauma: childhood and developmental trauma, neglect, abuse, bereavement, medical trauma, dissociation, flashbacks, anxiety, or the feeling of being permanently on edge or shut down. You don't need a diagnosis to start. I work online by Zoom with clients in the UK, across Europe, and in the USA, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Japan. I also see clients in person at my Liverpool, UK practice. Online therapy isn't suitable if you're in crisis or need urgent help. If that's you, please contact your local emergency or crisis services.
